The Great Migration was a time between 1910 and 1970 in the United States that Black Americans generally moved from the South Eastern States to the Northern, Mid-West, and Western States. This was primarily for economic opportunities and because of racial difficulties in the South (less overt in the North).

This was a slow process (faster during the Wars) as Jobs opened up in other parts of America.

It was also a rural to urban migration. Black Americans in the rural South went to the other Urban areas in America.

There has been a counter movement later in the 20 Century back to the South for similar reasons.

Family ties that communicated opportunities and gave support for newcomers were often a guiding factor given the difficulties travelling in the United States for African Americans.
