Let $C$ be Christy's age (currently) and $J$ be Juwan's age (currently).

Then

${(J = C - 36), (3(J - 8) = C - 8):}$

Simplify the second equation.

$3J - 24 = C - 8$

$C = 3J - 16$

Substitute the second equation into the first.

$J = 3J - 16 - 36$

$J - 3J = -52$

$-2J = -52$

$J = 26$
