When steam is passed over red hot coke (C), it (H_2OH2O) gets reduced hydrogen H_2H2 and carbon is oxidized to COCO producing a gas mixture of CO(g)CO(g) and H_2(g)H2(g),known as water gas.

C(s)("red hot") +H_2O(g)-> CO(g) + H_2(g)C(s)(red hot)+H2O(g)CO(g)+H2(g)

Delta H=+131"kJ/mol"->"endothermic reaction"
