This is a variant on the standardised equation of a circle.

Basically, the equation construct is using a triangle where the 1 is the length of the hypotenuse and one of the corners (vertex) is at the origin of the graph (where the axis cross). So by using Pythagoras you have x^2+y^2=r^2 where r (the hypotenuse) also represents the radius of a circle, the center of which coincides with the origin.

However, changing y^2 to (y-1)^2 bit moves the whole plot upwards by 1
