To have a front you need a cold air mass. The advancing edge of the cold air mass is the cold front and the trailing edge of a retreating cold air mass is a warm front. When an advancing cold air mass catches up to a retreating on the warm air between them is lifted. This is due to density (colder air is denser than warmer air) and it looks like this:
