Are all carbohydrates polymers?

1 Answer

All carbohydrates are not polymer. Simple sugars are members of the carbohydrate group that are not considered polymers.

Explanation:

Simple sugars like glucose and fructose are monomers, both with the molecular formula #C_6H_12O_6#. This is the stuff polymers are made of, when a lot of them are chained together.

Table sugar sucrose may be considered a dimer of glucose and fructose, formula #C_12H_22O_11#.

You would hardly call these "poly" (=many).
