There are two acceptable ways of naming these compounds.

Explanation:

(a) Using multiplying prefixes

mono = 1, but the prefix is omitted before the name of the first element

tetra = 4

penta = 5

hexa = 6

Thus,

P4S5 is tetraphosphorus pentasulfide

SF6 is sulfur hexafluoride

(b) Using Roman numerals to indicate oxidation numbers

When an element can have more than one oxidation number, the oxidation number is indicated by a Roman numeral in parentheses immediately following the name (no spaces) of the element.

Thus,

P4S5 is phosphorus(V) sulfide

SF6 is sulfur(VI) fluoride
