A spring with a constant of 23kgs2 is lying on the ground with one end attached to a wall. An object with a mass of 15kg and speed of 14ms collides with and compresses the spring until it stops moving. How much will the spring compress?

The spring will compress by =0.14m

The spring constant is k=23kgs2

The kinetic energy of the object is

KE=12mu2

KE=1215(14)2=1160J

This kinetic energy will be stored in the spring as potential energy.

PE=1160J

So,

12kx2=1160

x2=180k=12380=3160

x=3160=0.14m
