Here is a chart from Wikipedia that shows the nitrogen cycle. I am not an expert in biology so I hope that helps.
From what I have heard though, the nitrogen cycle starts with the decomposition of decaying matter which always produces some ammonium.
Then there are bacteria which separate the nitrogen from a certain type of bacteria living in the soil wich then either fertilizes the plants or escapes the atmosphere.
