Can empirical and molecular formulas be used to describe ionic concepts?

Why not..........mind you, you might have to clarify your question.

Explanation:

The empirical formula is the simplest whole number ratio that defines constituent atoms in a species. The molecular formula is ALWAYS a multiple of the empirical formula, and sometimes the multiple might be ONE.

Of course sodium peroxide, Na2O2, certainly an ionic species, has an empirical formula of NaO. Anyway, if I have not addressed your question I am happy to try again.
