We gots stackrel(+VII)"Cl" in "perchlorate........."

Explanation:

The sum of the oxidation numbers is equal to the charge on the ion; here we gots ClO_4^-. The oxidation state of oxygen is usually -II and it is here.....

And thus Cl_"oxidation number"+4xx(-2)=-1

It does not take too much arithmetic to see that Cl has an oxidation number of +VII.

What about for BrO_4^-, ClO_3^(-) ion, and ClO^-? Please put the answer in the comments.

And what is the oxidation number of aluminum?
