Does the lymphatic produce hormones? Does the lymphatic system assist in the coagulation of blood?
1 Answer
Yes, the lymphatics produce a hormone called Endothelin. And about the second part, yes it does.
Explanation:
The lymphatic system consists of lymph, lymph vessels, lymph
nodes, and four organs. The organs are the tonsils, the spleen, the thymus gland, the vermiform appendix, and Peyer’s patches. The lymphatics are a type of lymph vessel. like blood vessels the innermost layer of a lymph vessel is called Endothelium. And this endothelium produces a peptide hormone Endothelin. The lymphatic system is also associated with Immunity, both humoral and cellular. the Humoral immunity is not related to hormones. It is related to antibodies.
Another important function of the lymphatic system is to transport fats from the digestive tract to blood. With the fat lymphatic system also transports the fat soluble vitamins.
Vitamin K is a fat soluble vitamin. And it is associated with blood coagulation. So, does the lymphatic system assist in blood coagulation? Yes it does, by helping in the transportation of Vitamin K.
Here is the anatomy of Lymphatic system. The small rounded structures of cervical, axillary, lumber and inguinal areas are lymph nodes.
This is a diagram, showing the role of lymphatic system in transportation of vitamin K.
