Quasars are thought to be powered by supermassive black holes at the centre of ancient and hence distant galaxies.
Explanation:
A quasar is thought to be the result of material falling into the accretion disc around a supermassive black hole at the centre of a galaxy.
The gravitational effects of the black hole and friction as the material falls onto the accretion disc generates the huge energies which a quasar emits.
