Do you refer to "steel-making..........."??

Explanation:

Sulfur is removed from pig iron by the following reaction with magnesium..........

Mg(l) + 1/8S_8(s) rarr MgS(s)

I am told that the powdery magnesium sulfide floats atop of the liquid steel, and is then removed from the blast furnace.

If I wanted to represent this by means of half equations, I would separate the individual redox equations......

"Oxidation (i):" Mg rarr Mg^(2+) rarr 2e^(-)

"Reduction (ii):" S +2e^(-) rarr S^(2-)

"Overall (i) + (ii):" Mg(s) + S(s) rarr MgS(s)
