There is large variation in size of algae ranging from microscopic forms to large giant brown algae.

Algae exhibit wide variation in size. Algae vary from unicellular form like Chlamydomonas to multicellular forms. These may be filamentous ( Spirogyra, Ulothrix ) or thalloid ( Dictyota ).
The filamentous forms are small in size. These are visible to the naked eye, but their cell structure can be studied under microscope. The filaments may be unbranched or branched.
The thallus like body in Dictyota i s dichotomously branched. The thallus lobes often breakup after attaining certain size and forms separate plants by fragmentation.
Brown algae like Saragassum are many meters in length.
Thus wide variation is observed in size of different algae.
