Epidermal cysts commonly result from implantation of epidermis into the dermis, as in trauma or surgery.
Explanation:
Epidermal cysts are generally caused by a build up of keratin (naturally occurring protein) that is trapped below the skin due to disruption of the skin or to a hair follicle. They can also be caused by a blocked pore adjacent to a body piercing. They are also seen in Gardner's syndrome and Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome on the head and neck.
These cysts often develop in response to skin trauma, HPV infection, acne or excessive exposure to sun. They are more likely to develop in people with acne or other skin conditions.
An epidermal cyst is a benign cyst usually found on the skin. The cyst develops out of ectodermal tissue.
