To solve using substitution, start by isolating a variable.

-x + 5y = -13
-x = -13 - 5y
x = 13 + 5y
-4(13 + 5y) - 2y = 14
-52 - 22y = 14
-22y = 14 + 52
-22y = 66
y = -3

Plug in -3 for y in one of the equations

-x + 5(-3) = -13
-x - 15 = -13
