By 'evaluate' I assume you mean find a for f(2a)=0
a=1±7

Explanation:

Let ×y1=3x2+3x2f(x)

Then y1=3(2a)2+3(2a)2f(2a)

y1=3(4a2)+3(2a)2

y1=12a2+6a2

Let ×y2=1y1 giving

y2=112a2+16a12=0

Multiply throughout by 12 giving:

y2=a2+2a6=0

Using std form×xax2+bx+c=0

Where×x=b±b24ac2a

In the context of the given question we have:

a=2±(2)24(1)(6)2(1)

a=2±4+242

a=1±7

a1±2.65 to 2 decimal places
