consider the standard form $y = m x + c$ $y=mx+c$ where m is the slope (gradient).

Comparing to $y = 3 x - 2$ $y=3x-2$ we find by that the slope $m = 3$ $m = 3$

The y-intercept is when the graph crosses the y-axis. The y axis is at $x = 0$ $x=0$ so we substitute $x = 0$ $x=0$ and we get:

$y = 3 (0) - 2$ $y=3(0)-2$

$y = - 2$ $y=-2$
