#3p - 1 < 5#

Add #color(blue)1# to both sides:
#3p - 1 quadcolor(blue)(+quad1) < 5 quadcolor(blue)(+quad1)#

#3p < 6#

Divide both sides by #color(blue)3#:
#(3p)/color(blue)3 < 6/color(blue)3#

#p < 2#
