Common Half angle identity:
1. sina=2sin(a2)cos(a2)

Half angle Identities in term of t = tan a/2.
2. sina=2t1+t2

3.cosa=1t21+t2

  1. tana=2t1t2.

Use of half angle identities to solve trig equations.

Example. Solve cosx+2sinx=1+tan(x2).
Solution. Call t=tan(x2). Use half angle identities (2) and (3) to transform the equation.

1t24+1+t24=1+t.

1t2+4t=(1+t)(1+t2)

t3+2t23t=t(t2+2t3)=0.

Next, solve the 3 basic trig equations: tan(x2)=t=0;tan(x2)=3; and tan(x2)=1.
