Quasars are the nuclei of active galaxies.
Explanation:
There are a lot of activities going on in the nucleus of a galaxy likely due to an active black hole swallowing stars. Those galaxies are ancient and so far away that only their nuclei are visible which prompted astronomers to name them quasars or quasi-stellar objects. They look like stars when seen in photographs.
