In a rechargeable battery the chemical reaction between the metal and the acid is reversible, therefore, electrical energy from an outside source is applied to a secondary cell, the negative-to-positive electron flow that occurs during discharge is reversed, and the cell's charge is restored.

Basically, it's just a whole lot of electrical energy being put outside which reverses the reaction.
