Burning natural gas releases CO2 - a greenhouse gas and a contributor to global warming. If natural gas is not burned but leaks into the atmosphere, say from a leaky pipeline, it also enhances global warming, in an even stronger fashion. This is because natural gas or methane is about 21 times more powerful greenhouse gas as compared to CO2.
