How does peripheral neuropathy affect the brain?
1 Answer
The effect is indirect...
Explanation:
Peripheral neuropathy is a damage to the peripheral nerves. Nothing inside the brain is damaged in any way. However, the symptoms of this type of neuropathy can affect the brain in many ways.
Let us start with some one the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy: PAIN. This obviously causes sleep disruptions (which can affect the brain). There is also, in some cases, a symptom of light-headedness due to the loss of control of blood pressure. But this is only in autonomic neuropathy (which is quite serious and may lead to death as you have lost control of some of your autonomic functions).
In conclusion, the only real threat to the brain during peripheral neuropathy is sleep deprivation. : )
