The iron atom has 26 electrons in total; it must have if $Z = 26$ $Z=26$ ; why $must?$ $"must?"$ And thus upon oxidation.......

$F e \to F e^{3 +} + 3 e^{-}$ $FerarrFe^(3+) + 3e^-$

....the resultant ion has 23 electrons........
