America's isolationism was a pre-eminent part of American policy during the 1930's. It combined a desire to keep out of distant wars in Europe and Asia with a strong pro-German sympathy. Leading right wingers who supported such a policy included Charles Lindbergh.
Similarly British appeasement reflected the deep seated desire to avoid direct involvement in a European war given the carnage experienced in World War 1. As a consequence successive territorial concessions were made to Hitler until he miscalculated British and French resolve and invaded Poland on September 1st 1939.
