CAUSES
Global warming occurs when carbon dioxide and other air pollutants (green house gases) collect in the atmosphere and absorb sunlight and solar radiations that have bounced off the Earth's surface. Normally, radiations escape into space. But these pollutants can last for years in the atmosphere, trap the heat and cause the planet to get hotter. Coal burning power plants are by far the biggest polluters. Emissions caused by transport is also a major polluter.

EFFECTS
Global warming can cause severe environmental, economic, and health consequences.

1) melting glaciers, early snowmelt, severe droughts, and dramatic water shortages will result due to global warming.
2) rising sea levels will lead to coastal flooding.
3) forests, farms and cities will face troublesome new pests, heat waves, heavy downpours and increased flooding. This will lead to damage and destruction to agriculture and fisheries.
4) disruption of habitats may drive plant and animal species to extinction e.g. coral reefs.
5) spread of conditions favourable to pathogens and mosquitoes will result in allergies, asthma, and infectious disease outbreaks.
