Well have you never attempted to melt sodium chloride?

Explanation:

You need a blow torch because the melting point of the crystal is approx. 801 C. And you need an alumina crucible because the melting point of pyrex, i.e. borosilicate, is approximately round here.

It is a fact that the melt will conduct electricity due to mobility of the molten ions.........
