I first met my friend in 2005 and I met him again in 2007.It is now 2009. Which is correct: We did not see each other for 2 years or We had not seen each other for 2 years? Why did you choose your answer? Which one is correct? Thanks?

Explanation:

In British English one would probably use Past Perfect and say We had not seen each other for 2 years..

However in American English people often use Past Simple tense instead of Present Perfect. I am not sure if they would use Past Simple also in the meaning of Past Perfect like in this example.
