We know that the area of any trapezoid is
(AD+BC)/2*hAD+BC2h
To find the area we, therefore, only need to calculate h.

We can see from the figure that FD=3FD=3
(this follows from AG=FDAG=FD).

Therefore FC=h=4FC=h=4
(The triplet 3,4,5 is a well known triplet for right triangles, but you also see it from 3^2+4^2=5^232+42=52)

Therefore the area is
(14+8)/2*4=4414+824=44

Where bbhh is the perpendicular distance between the parallel lines.

From the diagram notice the line of symmetry is at the midpoints of the base and top, also notice that the triangle formed on the left has sides hh and 33.

The 3 is arrived at by noticing this is 7-474

We know the hypotenuse of the triangle is 5, so by Pythagoras' theorem:

h+sqrt((5)^2-(3)^2)=4h+(5)2(3)2=4
