Mesodermal skeletal rod supporting body of chordate, in embryonic stage, is called notochord .
Explanation:
- Please remember that in most chordates, notochord is partly or fully replaced by vertebral column.
- Then there are some, which lose the notochord during metamorphosis.
- And only a single small group, called lancelets, retain the notochord throughout life.
Accordingly, Phylum Chordata is divided in three subphyla:
- Vertebrata (=Craniata)
- Tunicata
- Cephalochordata
