Plains Indians believed in earth spirits(it is called Animism) man is only part of nature, he is not supposed to be dominant of it (unlike what Christians believed), which is why private property is impossible.

Though they mostly believed in the existence of a "Great Spirit" some sort of superior entity to other spirits, it was very different from Christian monotheism.
