In the dermis.

Explanation:

The skin has several layers (see image):

  • epidermis: the outermost layer of the skin; creates a barrier
  • dermis: contains connective tissue, sweat glands, hair follicles and nerve endings
  • hypodermis: the innermost layer of the skin also called subcutis; consists of fat that provides insulation.

So most of the 'action' takes place in the dermis layer, that is where the sweat glands are located (sometimes protruding into the hypodermis).
