Rather than just do the calculation I have given a lot of guidance as to how to go about the process.

x=12

Explanation:

Breaking the question down into its component parts:

One-half a number : 12×?

is: 12×?=

one-fourth: 12×?=14
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let the unknown value be represented by x
Building it up to how it is written in algebra:
12×?=14 12×x=14 12x=14
12x=14 x2=14
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Determine the value of x

Given: x2=14

To get x on its own we need to 'get rid' of the 2 in x2

This is the same as x÷2

For multiply or divide change the value into 1 to get rid of it. It then turns up on the other side of the =

Multiply both sides by 2

x2=14 2×x2=2×14

.
22×x=24×1

But 22=1 and 24=12
.

(1×x=12×1)

x=12
