He ate another $1/6$ of the entire footlong as a snack.

He ate one third of the half that he had.
That's the English sorted!

Now for the maths. IT is exactly the same.

$1/3 xx 1/2 = 1/6$

OR :

as soon as you see the denominators of 2 and 3 you should realise that you are working with sixths.

The original footlong was $6/6$ .

Half was eaten, meaning that of the $6/6$ , now $3/6$ are left.

One third is eaten, so three-sixths divided by 3 is $1/6$

$3/6 div 3 = 3/6 xx 1/3 = 1/6$

Or: find $1/3 of 3/6$

$1/cancel3 xx cancel3/6 = 1/6$
