The term CARBOHYDRATE literally means "carbon with water".

The base formula or empirical formula for a carbohydrate is

CH2O

Carbon with 2 Hydrogen and 1 Oxygen

C+H2O

Typical carbohydrates include

Glucose C6H12O6
Maltose C12H22O11
Ribose C5H10O5

Carbohydrates are sugars that are used primarily as the first source of energy cellular respiration.
