The four kinds of large biological molecules are carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.
CARBOHYDRATES
Carbohydrates are organic compounds made of C, H, and O atoms. They consist of long chains of monosaccharides (single sugars) linked together. Examples are starch, glycogen, and cellulose.
LIPIDS
Lipids are nonpolar molecules that are not soluble in water. Examples are cholesterol, triglycerides, and phospholipids.
PROTEINS
Proteins are chains of amino acids. The most abundant protein in the blood is albumin, which is also the chief protein of egg whites.
NUCLEIC ACIDS
Nucleic acids are long chains of smaller molecules called nucleotides. Examples are RNA and DNA.
