Primary production occurs in both terrestrial and aquatic plants as well as in algae, and chemoautotrophs.

Aquatic primary producers include kelp and water lilies and other plants like you see below.
Chemoautotrophs obtain energy through the oxidation of molecules that donate electrons. Examples include cyanobacteria and bacteria in the genus Thiothrix .
Deep sea vents like the one below are home to chemoautotrophs.
