There are 4 clinical grades or stages of Hepatic Encephalopathy : stage 1, stage 2, stage 3 & stage 4.
Explanation:
Hepatic encephalopathy is the cardinal manifestation of acute liver failure. It is a state of neuro-psychiatric syndrome, which occurs due to biochemical disturbance of brain function, caused by liver failure. A healthy liver metabolizes all the nitrogenous substances of gut origin, for example ammonia, mercaptan, octopamine.
But in case of a liver failure, these substances are not metabolized. They get circulated by blood and enters the brain, which leads to Hepatic Encephalopathy .
