What are the main water resources of India?
1 Answer
Like most regions of the world, water resources consist of surface water and associated rainfall, groundwater and water from melting glaciers.
Explanation:
Northern India gets much of its water from glacier runoff and rainfall that flows in the Ganges river system. There are rising concerns that the glacier water is at some risk in the Himalayan mountains due to global warming melting back the glaciers.
The monsoons in India occur at a regular time and provide a very important source of moisture for agriculture in India. But again, there are some concerns that global warming may be changing the timing and intensity of monsoon rains.
There are growing concerns about the gap between good quality water in India and the amount that is available. A booming economy is starting to use up and cause pollution in a number of rivers in the country (see pic).
