A synthesis reaction (combination reaction) occurs when two or more reactants combine to produce a single product. The generic reaction is "A+B"rarr"C" .

The following are examples of synthesis reactions.

Hydrogen gas plus oxygen gas produce water.

"H"_2("g")+"O"_2("g")rarr"H"_2"O(g)"

Sodium metal plus chlorine gas produce sodium chloride.

"Na(s)"+"Cl"_2("g")"rarr"NaCl(s)"

Synthesis reactions can also occur between compounds.

Calcium oxide plus carbon dioxide produce calcium carbonate.

"CaO(s)"+"CO"_2("g")rarr"CaCO"_3("s")
