There are actually 5 layers of the epidermis.
Explanation:
(from bottom to top)
- Stratum Basale
- Stratum Spinosum
- Stratum Granulosum
- Stratum Lucidium (only in thick skin in hands and feet)
- Stratum Corneum
They are related in the sense that the stratum basale is the site of cell replication and those cells degrade more and more as you move up the layers of the epidermis.
