And of course water is an excellent solute; it can dissolve both ionic and non-ionic solutes.

The boiling point of water is 100 C at atmospheric pressure, which is unusually high. This is much higher than comparable molecules, NH3, H2S, SO2. The degree and extent of hydrogen bonding that occurs in water, as an intermolecular force, can rationalize water's unusual properties as a solvent.
