What does the election of Trump mean for the future of the US?

I posted this in the Meta for lack of better place to post this. I personally feel my voice wasn't heard and honestly I'm scared. Please try to refrain from political rants or attacks.

There is clearly a lot of anger that is being released in the US - what I'm hopeful for is that the people who are angry have their needs addressed by this administration. What I fear is that that anger will be kept stoked for purely political purposes with no resolution for those who are angry.

Explanation:

From my perspective (former US citizen, now Canadian, living in Thailand, and approaching 50 - whatever generation that is...) I think President-elect Trump brings a few things with him.

For Mr Trump himself, it's that he brings uncertainty. As has been noted in many places, he has held virtually every position on every issue there is. And so it's hard to know what will happen in that regard.

It's in what follows that things, for me, become concerning.

The early names being put up for Cabinet posts are alarming with an article here on Huffington Post. These people hold beliefs that are radically out of line in what I regard as being good for people and good for a country.

But most alarming off all is to watch the news and social media report with depressing frequency the number of attacks on women (being physically assaulted on their way to the grocery store, for example - which happened to a friend of mine in the US - and being called a "liberal c**t"), the number of incidents of graffiti aimed at people of colour and differing religious beliefs (other than Christianity) - these are what concern me the most.
