It is used for nitrogen oxides.

$N O, N O_{2}, N O_{3}, N_{2} O, N_{2} O_{3}, N_{2} O_{4}$ $NO, NO_2, NO_3, N_2O, N_2O_3, N_2O_4$ , and $N_{2} O_{5}$ $N_2O_5$ .

But only two of them are important:

$N O$ $NO$ (nitrogen monoxide or nitric oxide) and
$N O_{2}$ $NO_2$ (nitrogen dioxide) in air pollution.
