Sickle cell anemia is a result of abnormal hemoglobin of genetical origin.
Explanation:
On chromosome 11 there is gene called HHB. Expression of this gene results in secretion of abnormal hemoglobin. This hemoglobin has glutamic acid instead of valine.
The replacement of normal amino acid to glutamic acid leads to change shape of red blood cell to Sickle like. These abnormal blood cells do not pass through capillaries. There are many clinical complications of Sickle cell anemia.
