A mood is the feeling of the passage, while a tense when the passage takes place

Mood i.e:
The weather outside was dark and stormy, the clouds blocking out any trace of light.

Tense i.e:
Max thought that the flowers were pretty - Past
Max thinks that the flowers are pretty - Present
Max will think that the flowers are pretty - Future
