In the passive moment, it allows diffusion of small and non polar molecules to pass in or out of the cell and prevents unwanted polar ions or molecules to enter the cell. Also proteins help in carrying out facilitated diffusion for ions and big molecules.
In active process, proteins in the membrane act as a path for molecules which are bigger and charged and are moving against the concentration gradient.
