$M {(O H)}_{2} (s) + 2 H X (a q) \to M C l_{2} (a q) + 2 H_{2} O (l)$ $M(OH)_2(s) +2HX(aq) rarr MCl_2(aq) + 2H_2O(l)$

This is, in effect, an acid base reaction, i.e.:

$H O^{-} + H_{3} O^{+} \to 2 H_{2} O (l)$ $HO^(-) + H_3O^(+) rarr 2H_2O(l)$
